June’s Competition – Win a Copy of ‘Paddington: Here & Now’
To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Paddington Bear we’re offering you the chance to win a copy of his brand new collection of stories, entitled ‘Paddington: Here & Now’.
Created by former BBC cameraman Michael Bond, Paddington first appeared in 1958 in a book called ‘Here Comes Paddington’, in which our hero arrives at a London train station from Darkest Peru, where he is ‘found’ by the Brown family and taken to their home to be looked after, and so begins his new life.
An iconic and much loved classic, Paddington was also years ahead of his time, dealing with issues of immigration and integration long before ‘multiculturalism’ became a fashionable term. He was, after all, an illegal immigrant, whose plight was looked on with compassion and understanding by his new hosts. Lessons to be learned? And who could forget the friendship he forms with Mr Gruber, the Antiques Dealer – himself an immigrant from Hungary? And all dealt with in the most endearing and loving manner by Michael Bond, without a hint of preachiness or loss of innocence.
For ‘Paddington: Here & Now’, Mr Bond again deals with these contemporary issues, with Paddington being quizzed by immigration officers and facing the possibility of deportation! This is, however, his funniest collection of stories to date and should see Paddington reaching a whole new generation of readers. We at The Bear Club love him!
